Koos was born on March 16, 1939 in the Hague, Holland. At 15 he bypassed the 18 year old requirement age to attend The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague with a comprehensive portfolio. Here he studied fashion and made window displays for department stores. Koos went to Paris to design window displays for the famous Galeries Lafayette. In 1962 he enrolled in L’Ecole Guerre Lavigne which was located in the same building as the Christian Dior workrooms. Koos was selected by Dior for an apprentice ship. In 1965 he moved back to Holland and started his business in The Hague. In 1968 Koos moved to NYC to pursue his career in fashion. Koos’ women’s stores were located on Columbus Avenue, Madison Avenue and Bleecker Street. The Men’s stores were on Thompson Street and East 56th Street. In the mid seventies he had a wholesale line with clients such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Bonwit Teller and Bloomingdale’s and nationwide specialty stores. From 1998 to 2006 Koos started a label for television retailer QVC called ‘Koos of Course!’ and presented his own show. Koos has been the only “couture” designer on QVC Network to sell one million dollars in one hour. Koos is known for the famous Bill Cosby sweaters and dressed other celebrities such as Anthony Quinn, Elton John, Cher, Ringo Star, Elizabeth Taylor, Barbara Walters, Stevie Wonder, Brook Shields, Isabella Rossellini and many more. In 2002 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the San Francisco Academy of Art College as a Doctor of Humane Letters. Koos currently lives in NYC, has a store at 1263 Madison Avenue and works in his workroom in the Garment District.
